8 August 2024

South Metropolitan TAFE (SM TAFE) was proud to be part of the Perth SkillsWest Careers and Employment Expo from 25 – 27 July at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. We joined over 150 fellow educators at the expo, which is WA’s biggest showcase of jobs, skills and training.

The first two days of the expo were chock-full of high school students finding out about career opportunities, whilst Saturday saw many parents attend to explore training pathways for their child’s future.

The later years of high school mark a key turning point in a young person’s life, where they are encouraged to start thinking about what they wish to do for a job.

SM TAFE staff spoke to hundreds of students, parents, graduates and job seekers about course options, and the Jobs and Skills Centre provided free 15-minute career counselling sessions and training advice.

Minister Assisting the Minister for Training and Workforce Development, Hon Hannah Beazley MLA, attended the event, visiting all SM TAFE booths to chat with the teams and try our interactive stations.

Expo highlights!

In the Try’aSkill zone, interactive activities provided expo attendees with a taster of some of the many SM TAFE courses on offer, such as:

  • A real-world helicopter and turbine engines with our aviation team, with info about how to become a commercial aeroplane pilot.
  • An augmented reality welding simulator with our defence industry experts, who spoke about training options for this exciting field.
  • A childcare simulated set up with our early childhood team, for those who have a calling to care for others.
  • A cyber-attack demonstration from our IT gurus(opens in a new tab) , growing awareness on how to get trained for key roles such as an IT support officer or network technician.
  • Health checks from practising nursing students, putting the spotlight on how to become a nursing support worker or an enrolled nurse.
  • The science and environment(opens in a new tab) team put lab technology careers under the microscope.
  • Our horticulture crew provided some inspo on starting an outdoors career at a nursery or garden centre – the free plants on day one were a huge hit!
