A bold career move has delivered award success for Trae Turvey of Butler, who has been named the South Metropolitan TAFE (SM TAFE) Trainee of the Year.

After making the transition from the construction sector to information technology, Trae started a traineeship with IT service company ASG.

Trae is now working as an IT consultant providing network support and assisting with software deployment.  As he continues to grow in capability and experience, he plans to undertake further TAFE studies, enabling him to pursue his desired career in cyber security.

Highlighting what an impressive year he has enjoyed, Trae was also named a finalist in the SM TAFE Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander of the Year Award.

Success in his Certificate III in Information, Digital Media and Technology course was attributable to a passion for computing and strong skills developed over several years, with a focus on computing and network support.

SM TAFE’s Student Awards recognise the achievements of students from across the college, including winners in the categories Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year, Apprentice of the Year, International Student of the Year, Vocational Student of the Year, VET Secondary Student of the Year, and the Cultural Diversity Training Award.

He is planning to continue her current studies in Training and Assessment with a view to becoming an educator.

SM TAFE Executive Director Training Services and panel chair Jonathon Maile said Trae had been an exemplary student.
“Trae could always be relied on to be a clear, positive and friendly communicator during training sessions,” he said.
“He was highly sought after to work with in teams due to his cheerful demeanour and strong work ethic.”

South Metropolitan TAFE offers a wide range of information technology training pathways, from entry-level courses through to diplomas and advanced diplomas, that can prepare students for university study.

SM TAFE also boasts a purpose-built Training Cyber Security Operations Centre (TCSOC)(opens in a new tab) , which provides students with a secure training environment designed to simulate realistic cyber-attacks.
