TAFE fashion student wins at wearable art event

South Metropolitan TAFE (SM TAFE) fashion student Emily Pedlow (Midland) has taken out the Tertiary Pairing Project Award at the City of Mandurah’s Wearable Art showcase event at the weekend.

Emily won the award for her collaborative design with University of Bucharest student Maria Dumitrescu.

Based on the theme of migration, Emily and Maria’s design was inspired by the metamorphosis and movement of birds. Their design was created using a combination of organic shapes cut from foil acetate and paper joined with silicone lace reminiscent of bird feathers.

Three SM TAFE Advanced Diploma in Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising students collaborated with interstate and international fashion and arts students for this award category.

Furthermore, a total of seven SM TAFE student finalists from certificate IV, diploma and advanced diploma qualifications were selected as finalists in the tertiary category of the event. The designs featured simultaneously live, and in film, paraded across the oval at David Grays Arena (Peel Thunder Stadium) in a never-before-seen wearable art event.

The finalists took design inspiration from various and wide-ranging current and historical themes with many garments focused on sustainability by using recycled or waste products. Textile and fabrication techniques included felting, crochet, embroidery, and the use of foil, silicon, foam, cane and lino-printing.

SM TAFE creative industries portfolio manager Andrea Quintal said SM TAFE’s involvement in this event was a celebration of the artistic concepts that different creative industry areas have in common.

“We are privileged once again to be a part of the Mandurah Wearable Art program, which provides our students with the opportunity to connect and collaborate with industry creatives and share their design triumphs with the wider community,” Ms Quintal said.
SM TAFE fashion qualifications range from VET Delivered to Secondary Schools (VETDSS) (opens in a new tab) pathway programs to the Advanced Diploma (opens in a new tab) of Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising.(opens in a new tab)
