Wilson woman beats obstacles to win Student of the Year Award

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Angela Dann, a proud Wangkatha woman, of Wilson, has taken out the South Metropolitan TAFE (SM TAFE) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year Award.

Having to raise and support a child with special needs did not deter Angela from deciding to pursue a career in logistics and engineering.

After her son was diagnosed with Autism, Angela decided to pursue her passion for maths and design and enrol and complete the 52904WA Certificate III in Defence Pathway at SM TAFE.

After receiving her qualification, Angela secured employment with BAE Systems Australia - a company that provides some of the world’s most advanced, technology-led defence, aerospace and security solutions, where she has put her skills and knowledge into practice.

SM TAFE Award Panel Chair, Michelle Dodd, said Angela’s passion and determination to succeed led to her award recognition.

“Angela is a mum, carer, student and worker and is an incredible ambassador for women in her community,” Michelle said.

“She is diligent and not afraid to have a go at anything, and I have no doubt she will have a successful career in the defence industry and beyond.”
SM TAFE provides qualifications in a range of careers in the defence industry from cybersecurity to logistics.

SM TAFE’s Student Awards recognise the achievements of students from across the college, including winners in the categories Apprentice of the Year, Trainee of the Year, International Student of the Year, Vocational Student of the Year, VET Secondary Student of the Year, and the Culturally Diverse Student of the Year Award.
